Social class and sole registered births 1971 to 2001

Steve Smallwood, Office for National Statistics

[Project number 20069]

This is a brief study to follow up on a response by ONS to a parliamentary question: "To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, how many babies were born to unmarried mothers for whom no name of the father was entered on the birth certificate in each of the last 30 years, or in those years for which figures are available; what the (a) social class and (b) age of the mother at the birth of her first child were in each case; and how many subsequent births, when the name of the father was not entered on the birth certificate of the child, each mother had".

The LS can construct fertility history records for all female members traced at NHSCR and combine this registration data with data from census to provide additional data on social class of mother either individually or by proxy (ie father or spouse social class).
