Mortality (by cause) and social relations 1981-2000 in England and Wales: census linked study

Mel Bartley, University College London

[Project number 20060]

The new Statistics Socio-Economic classification (NS-SEC) is based upon employment relations theory. Stress at work, and aspects of employment relations theory have been found to be strong predictors of cardio-vascular disease.

This study will investigate:

  1. Whether NS-SEC better explains variations in cardio-vascular disease than variations in other major causes of death; and
  2. The possibility of controlling for occupational hazards (for instance, by using the ‘Southampton Groups’).
