STATA CODE

Name of derived variable: REGION81
Variable label: Standard Region (i.e. 1974 boundaries) at 1981 Census, with inappropriate cases deleted and an option to show Inner and Outer London separately
Categories: 1 "Northern"
2 "Yorkshire & Humberside"
3 "North West"
4 "East Midlands"
5 "West Midlands"
6 "East Anglia"
7 "South East"
8 "South West"
9 "Wales"
10 "Inner London"
11 "Outer London"
Derived from: STRGXUA8 (table ME81); also COUA8 & DIUA8 (both ME81) to distinguish London from rest of South East
Study group: People usually resident in England or Wales at 1981 Census
Exclusions: People coded -8 or -9 at STRGXUA8 must be dropped because they are usually resident outside England and Wales, or they were enumerated as visitors and their usual address is not given. Those coded -8 were in England or Wales at the 1971 Census but in Scotland at the 1981. Ignore the fact that some of them have a code within E&W at COUA8, this is incorrect.
STRGXUA8 has 9 missing cases and so, therefore, does REGION8.
Likely uses: Work on regional migration or on London. Compatible with REGION71, REGION91 and REGION01.
