Derived variables: region

Administrative and census geographies are liable to change over time; for more details see the Training Module on LS Geography. The basic government classification was Standard Statistical Region from 1974 to the mid-1990s and Government Office Region (GOR) thereafter; there were a number of boundary changes between the two. A further change occurred in 1998 within the GOR classification when the region of Merseyside was added to the region of the North West.

These variables allow longitudinal analysis with LS members linked to consistent geographical boundaries. They also recode to numeric values where necessary.

Applied to cases from:
1971 Census Region of usual residence (Standard Region)
1981 Census Region of usual residence (Standard Region)
1991 Census Region of usual residence (Standard Region)
2001 Census Region of usual residence (Standard Region)
1971 Census Region of usual residence using post-1996 boundaries (GOR)
1981 Census Region of usual residence using post-1996 boundaries (GOR)
1991 Census Region of usual residence using post-1996 boundaries (GOR)
2001 Census Region of usual residence in 2001(GOR) recoded to numeric values
